8 : The Mormon Proposition

I watched 8 : The Mormon Proposition last night.

It's hard to put my reaction in words, but if I had to pin it down to one word, it would be...

ASHAMED

Ashamed that my name still counts as a member of that organization.

Ashamed for the hurt which has been done in the name of God.

Ashamed that I am not doing to more to ease suffering and help my fellow man.

Ashamed that last week, when I explained what the end of Don't Ask, Don't Tell was to a superior, and he actually said "I wouldn't want to share a tent with a fag." that I didn't have any words, and all I did was to turn and walk away, disgusted with him, and since, disgusted with myself.

I need to do more.

  1. I haven't seen the entire film but I've seen clips and I know some of the people interviewed for it. There are some incredible people out there working to make things just a little better for gay members and their families who are struggling. I hope someday to become a little more like them.

  2. I just watched it this weekend too! Obviously it's not an unbiased documentary (meaning, I couldn't help but notice an extra-inflammatory jab here and there), but I thought the evidence presented against the church was pretty damning. Boo. I'm so glad to be free to think for myself on this issue. I'm 100% in support of gay marriage.

  3. I noticed the jabs too. But considering all the facts I think they did a pretty good job about staying objective for most of it.

I thought the interviews with Linda Stay were by far the highlight for me though. She is truly inspiring - as were her son and son-in-law.

  4. Such ignorance, stupidity, hatefulness, I really hate to hear stories like this, and from a "superior" even, someone whom you have to work with who uses language like that.

  5. It's a big motivation behind my job search right now... I shared how I felt with Mrs Koda yesterday, and while she shares my concerns, she's worried that if I do anything about it, it'll put my job at risk - which it might. There is a quite a bit more to the story though.

But I think it comes down to pure ignorance, and then blind obedience to Church leaders.
